“I want the citizen’s participation.” So says Judith Merkies, Dutch MEP and a member of the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) committee, as she looks forward to new legislation, greater political focus and more spending on domestic power generation, alternative transport and personalised medicine, to directly involve Europe’s citizens in innovation. “The sustainable world is not going to work if we don’t have citizens who want to buy green cars,” the former lawyer and Commission official told Science|Business.

PvdA-Europarlementslid Judith Merkies roept de Europese Commissie op om actie te ondernemen tegen Italië, dat sinds kort het nationale park rond de Vesuvius volgooit met huisvuil.
Merkies bezocht de regio als leidster van een delegatie van het Europarlement. Aanleiding is het aanhoudende probleem met ophopend huisvuil in Napels en omgeving. Ze zag hoe ophaalwegens ladingen huisvuil storten in het beschermde park rond de vulkaan.
,,Onacceptabel dat Italië zelfs zo ver gaat dat het vuilnis stort zo dicht bij de historische Romeinse stad Pompeii”, zei Merkies vrijdag …

In a landmark conference yesterday, jointly hosted in the European Parliament by leading MEPs and campaigning organisation Micropower Europe, there was a unanimous call for a consumer-led energy revolution, with microgeneration at its heart.
Conference co-chair Judith Merkies MEP said “everything starts and ends with citizens’ participation. We need a change in policy to turn the neighbours literally green with envy”, whilst other panellists and delegates strongly supported calls for a Commission-sponsored Microgeneration Strategy for Europe.
