Statement on Waste Management in Campania
To the petitioners, stakeholders and all those interested in waste management in Campania:
Tomorrow, Thursday 15 July 2010, the report on the waste petitions of Campania will be presented in the Petitions Committee in the European Parliament.
The report as presented by the delegation can be found here after the meeting: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/activities/committees/reportsCom.do?language=EN&body=PETI
Since our visit to Campania in April we have not only written the report, but also conducted many in depth discussions with authorities in the European Union on waste legislation, support possibilities and funding options. The delegation has spoken with Commissioner Hahn (Regional Policy) and I have spoken with Commissioner Potočnik (Environment). In July as well as in September the European Commission is invited to comment on the report and the recent developments in Campania.
We are committed to help to improve the situation in Campania and will continue to do whatever is within our possibilities.
Therefore, I am very sorry not to be able to meet the petitioners and stakeholders in July and sorry not be present at the presentation of the report in Parliament. I have pleaded for another date, however, the majority in the Parliament supported the discussion in July on the last day before the summer break.
I trust the Petitions Committee will have a good discussion on Campania’s waste situation on Thursday and I look forward to hear about improvements during our discussion on September 30.
May I wish everybody a very good and healthy summer, with an ever improving environment?
Take care,
Judith Merkies
